Re: male student?
It's more to responsibilities especially if the male is oldest son in the family. Have to earn money to alleviate the burden of the parents especially when there are lots of siblings. Sacrifice.

its all up to the interest, abilities and capabilities, opportunities and exposures. Female and female or male and male itself have so many differences what more to say about across gender?

Re: male student?
It's just another certificate we use.. Do you still remember our UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM certs? they are almost useless now. 5-10 years from now, our degree sheet will get the same fate as well.

Re: male student?
A degree does not mean higher standard of life. Sometimes, with a degree, you'll have a perception that you do now want a job that does not require a degree.. sort of like "less freedom" so you might overlooked chance there. For example, jobs like property trader, photographer, modern farmer and businesses sometimes depend more on brains rather than the books.
More headache. Another is marriage issue. Society still looks down if either bride/groom have degree but the partner dont have.
But whats best is that with degree you can opt for salary of minimum
2k and people listen to you more, just because you have degree holder!

Reason behind this? because the minimum requirement to become a lecturer is a master, with a degree you only can become a tutor or so. Ask around.

This is a wrong assumption, it depends on where you're working (Peninsula? Borneo? Overseas? and rural or urban). The actual minimum wage is 1.5k - 2k (if you're lucky).
As of stating the education and academia world's status
*in Malaysia, **World wide
*PTS > UPSR > PMR > SPM (minimum requirement of universal free education)
*Matrix > Diploma > STPM (extended education)
** Degree > Master > PhD (Dr./ doctor title) > Associates Professor (AP title)
** Professor (you'll retain your tittle as professor as long you're working or related to any universities, once you left you'll be called as Dr since that's you're highest education)
** Maestro Professor (you'll hold this title with you till you go into your grave even when your not related to any university, only if you made tremendously significant contribution to your region of studies)
