Chelsea vs malaysia select XI
Wow, it has been a while since i've been able to do any posting in this forum. Well, this is all down to the below-par internet connection in unimas, frustrated with the connection as always, to say the least. Oh, guess i should stop all this complaining and get right down to the topic at hand.
Well, yesterday, 29-7-08 was quite a historic day for the Malaysian football team (a good history in the books this time!). Whether you're a football fan or not, you would have realised to some extent that Chelsea came down to Malaysia for a pre-season match with a select group of the best players from the Malaysian Super League. Sounds like a one-sided match? Absolutely! Everyone gave their honest predictions about the score and most people predicted that Chelsea would score more than 5 goals while the Malaysian team wouldn't be able to score even a single goal! Such is the public's perception towards the national football team. Aiyoh, give them face a bit la.
However, Chelsea were in for a real test as the Malaysian squad were desperate to prove the local supporters wrong in their overall judgment of their team. It was arguably the toughest pre-season game for Chelsea so far. The Malaysian team impressed (by Malaysian standards of course) a sell-out crowd of about 70,000 football fanatics at the Shah Alam stadium with their spirited displays.
The game ended 2-0, which, if you look at it at Malaysian standards (again...), is a pretty HUGE achievement. Imagine the national squad playing against the likes of Lampard, Joe Cole, Ashley Cole & Cech. Selangor's Amirul Hadi Zainal nearly proved to be a handful when he gave Petr Cech the first real shock of their pre-season games. In the second minute, he drilled a shot narrowly wide off the right post which prompted the towering goalkeeper to sprawl across his goal. Malaysia goalkeeper, Helmi Eliza Elias also managed to produce a vital save from Deco's volley.
As for the goals, Anelka scored on 26 min, whereas Ashley Cole scored on 53 min. Despite the defeat, it was a memorable night for the Malaysian team.
More to come in the upcoming posts! To all readers, feel free to give your two cents worth about the match.
