Re: sibu travel
Sarikei is significantly smaller than Sibu, you might find Sarikei boring if you are city-type. Places i think are possible tourist attractions are the Sebangkoi, the Taman Tasik Sarikei, and the Sarikei wharf.
Sarikei is originally started as a fishing village at the intersection of Sg. Nyelong-Sg. Rejang and Sg. Sarikei, later it evolved into regional trading center (as agriculture trading center). Hence the wharf is symbolic to Sarikei.
Later pepper industry kicks in and Chinese people plants it. Sarikei town continues to grow as shops and business blooms..
there's some photos at wikipedia.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarikei#Photo_Gallery

Re: sibu travel
that toilet actually very funny.. I wonder what is the purpose of constructing such "artistic" toilet at the end of the street.. It's quite secluded from other attractions.

Re: sibu travel
down the street near the toilet is the ferry for Sg. Nyelong, i think you might also have a ride on it. Ferries are common to transport cars and people across rivers in Sarawak..
But if not mistaken also got ferry to transport veicle and human in Perak? Lumut if not mistaken?

Re: sibu travel
Last time when the Sibu bridges hasnt been constructed, vehicles from Sarikei-Sibu have to cross the Rejang river through ferries. There's two ferries for each crossing and in festive seasons where people go to the town or airport, there will be long queues. the queue can be as long as 3 hrs (that's max i ever encountered) before you get to cross the ferry. Worse is when the weather is blazing hot and vehicles break down halfway..
Cutting Qs are not uncommon and usually resulting in fights especially gangstas where they think they are big. Some occasions police have to guard the place to prevent cutting lines..
those experiences are now history as the bridges open in 21st century..

Re: sibu travel
Too bad (Or luckily?) you wont be experiencing it anymore. It's not a pleasant experience btw. And the bridge is delayed several years, changing contractors due to economy; it add fumes to you when you queue very long.
